With five first teamers unavailable Bees took to the field with just 13 players. The early exchanges were fairly even with the home side opening the scoring with an unconverted try after 8 minutes when a fortunate bounce fell into the hands of a supporting runner. With only 6 players in the pack Hales scored a second 5 minutes later from a five metre line out. Conversion missed.
With the visitors securing good possession from Billy Castle in the line out a number of attacks looked promising just as Hales received two yellow cards in quick succession for killing the ball. This evened the game up at 13 a side! Skipper and fly half Martin Hooker led from the front and used his backs well as centres Bryan Sibiya and Chris Price made in roads into the midfield but on four occasions the slippery ball was spilt giving the home side further opportunities to score which they did on 20 minutes and then again after another lucky bounce from a tap down in the line out just on the 40th minute. Both unconverted.
An injury to Price saw Bees down to 12 men after the break and another error from a good Bees attack saw their opponents take advantage and score an unconverted try. Bees continued to battle with forwards George Rees, Josh Dewstowe, Liam Dunne and Jake Hayden-Wright carrying the ball strongly and making hard yards forward but the 3 man advantage for the home side saw two more tries. At 39-0 it may have been easier to concede but there was little chance of this happening as the boys dug in even deeper and some rare possession led to more straight running from Sibiya that took them to 10 metres out , where No 8 Castlle barged over for a try. Matthew Dight converted. Minutes later Dight got a try of his own after more good handling from Jack Seifas and Sibiya got him in space to evade his opposite man and race down the touch line. Conversion missed. Dight almost added a third try from the restart but was held up just short. At this point Hayden-Wright left the field injured so Bees played the last 20 minutes with just 11 players! A touch of tiredness crept in as Halesonians then exploited the 4 man overlaps to score 3 more tries.
The effort and commitment was exemplary from the 13 guys that showed up and were a credit to their club
On another positive note the team contained 6 current Bees colts and 5 former colts in their line up against a much older and experienced team.
