Second defeat of the season for Colts

Second defeat of the season for Colts

Terence Dight10 Oct 2014 - 21:12

Battling Bees Colts were well beaten in their latest League game at Hereford.

Battling Bees Colts were well beaten in their latest League game at Hereford. Starting with just 14 due to late cry offs it was going to be a big ask to get anything from the game. However the visitors started brightly, taking the lead after 7 minutes when full back Alex Povey entered the line on the blindside and fed wing Matthew Dight who finished off in style for an unconverted try. Further runs from centre Dan Bagby led to opportunities but poor handling from the Bees backs saw the chances squandered.
On 19 minutes Hereford got into the game with a well worked converted try under the posts. 5 minutes later Bees failed to drop on the ball and the kick through, together with missed tackles led to a try in the corner. The conversion was missed. With the visitors reduced to 13 due to a harsh yellow card for prop Alex Benton, the home side began to exploit their opponents lack of numbers in defence and on the half hour Hereford got their third try. Two minutes later another yellow card for flanker Matt Hind, and his opposite number, following a brawl after a Hereford player pushed his Bees opponent after the ball had gone into touch. This incident also led to a red card for Bees Alex Benton who had entered the field of play while in the sin bin.
At 19-5 at the break and now with just 12 players the home side notched up three tries in 8 minutes to take an unassailable 38-5 lead. However with Bees back to 13 a period of pressure near the home line saw second row Billy Castle rip the ball clear and drive over for an unconverted try. The visitors then looked to move the ball at every opportunity to secure a bonus point by getting two more tries but mistakes led to two break away converted tries from the home side. The game then ended on a sour note when full back Alex Povey suffered a serious cut to the head requiring 7 stitches when tackled into touch. Another skirmish followed off the pitch so the referee ended proceedings with the final whistle.
