Colts go down fighting in National U18 Cup 4th round

Terence Dight1 Feb 2015 - 22:15

Last years U17 champions had to dig deep to overcome spirited Bees.

Having been well beaten by their opponents in both league games so far this season the boys needed no motivating and knew what to expect from their visitors. However Wolverhampton certainly weren't going to have it all their own way if the early exchanges were to go by.
The home side started by showing some early signs and believing they could win. However from a central scrum the visitors centre made a late run down the blind side that Bees failed to spot which resulted in an unconverted try. On 14 minutes with the home side looking dangerous with ball in hand an error gave Wolves possession on the Bees 22 and from a ruck one of their forwards raced over unopposed as a clear block on tackler Jack Lazenby that the referee missed. The try was converted.
With Bees feeling aggrieved they bounced back in style with skipper and centre Dan Bagby leading by example with some great runs and aggressive tackles. Then from their own line fellow centre Matt Bentley kicked ahead and with the ball held up in the wind it bounced perfectly for wing Matt Dight to step inside and race clear to score under the posts and then convert. Flanker George Rees then enjoyed a fine run to the line, fed wing Tom Cooper who was tackled and the visitors were able to clear.
With the home side now in the ascendancy and looking for another score the second half started positively but they lost a scrum against the head and the bigger Wolves forward picked up and took advantage with another unconverted try.
At 17-7 down flanker Matt Hind showed good alertness and pounced through the line out to score. Dight saw the conversion drift just wide. At 12-17 fresh legs entered the contest with Castle, Purser, Dhani-Ali and Millichap coming on but it was Wolverhampton who scored their fourth try from close range. The final minutes saw Bees have a period of pressure on the Wolves line when a try would have give the score line a more realistic refection of the contest.
Bees now have their sights set on the North Midlands Cup when they go to Church Stretton for a rearranged round 1 game.
