Late report this week as a trip to Leeds to see Green Day followed the game. I know its not rugby but they are a stonkingly good band live.
Cold damp morning for Bees match up with Luctonians for the NMC quarter final.
Luctonians kick off the first half with the advantage of the slope soon assisted when Bees clearing box kick from the first ruck goes out on the full. Luctonians knock on at the line out. From the Bees scrum Luctonians earn turnover ball midfield on Bees 22. Good recycling sees Luctonians getting up to Bees line but each attack is stopped with Bees eventually clearing after Luctonians are penalised for holding on. Bees secure possession from the line out and both defences come out on top containing the game between the respective 22's with Luctonians edging the territory. Lewis H gets a yellow for reacting after being held by a Luctonians player after play move on from a ruck. Play restarts with a Bees scrum soon followed by a penalty. Bees go quickly an chip but Luctonians recover the ball kicking long. Noah has to back track to get to the ball but a strong run through the broken field sees him go in at the corner for the first score 14 minutes in. 5-0
From the restart Luctonians contain Bees to their half eventually progressing up and into Bees 22. Taking advantage of the yellow Luctonians again exert pressure with strong defence from Bees. Further advantage to Luctonians when Ollie H gets a yellow for a tackle taking the player over the horizontal. Heaving pressure again excerted on the Bees line but the reduced defence held out again. Pressure released with a bang when turnover secured in the 22 is run strongly upfield with some great off loading getting Bees up close to the line with Andy eventually powering over on 20 minutes for 10-0.
Luctonians kick long from the restart and the return kick soars long to just outside Luctonians 22. Near parity of numbers restored and strong defensive exchanges continue, but Luctonians contained outside Bees 22. Deadlock broken following getting turnover following a Luctonians scrum possession against the head and a glorious dummy from Noah bought by I think everyone watching as well! allowing him to go through and race up to the posts. Converting his own score for 17-0 on 31 minutes.
Luctonians continue the contest from the restart with some strong defence and successful recycling but Bees defence just wont yield today. Bees close out the half with a turnover kicked up field for a foot race and further kicking through before Noah is brought down without the ball. No defence left meaning the ref had no choice but to yellow card the Luctonians player and award a penalty try. Noah converts for 24-0.
The first half was some of the best defence you'll see.
Luctionians gather the restart and clear Bees kicking the return to near the 22. Luctonians gain possession from the lineout but the ball gets spilled in midfield. Bees pounce quickly getting the ball out wide for Tom J to make a strong run an go over out wide. 36 minutes in for 29-0.
Initial exchanges from the restart provides Bees with a lineout near halfway. An initial break by Lewis H, sets up Nathan to charge down the wing, stopped deep in the 22 but a couple of rucks later and Ollie bundles over on 40 minutes for 34-0.
The game settles again with Luctonians possibly looking at the scoreboard and asking how, but dusting themselves down and competing well. Luctonians get to Bees 22 following a penalty but Bees steal the lineout and an initial run from Tom J, quick recycling and an offload gives Kamil half a chance which he takes. 50 minutes in 39-0.
Some bullocking runs from Bees gargantuan front row (stole that from Newark’s report on last week) set the tone for the second half and remainder of the gain. I'm sure gravity and the slope helped though!
Bees scoring again with Kamil and Noah going over in the next 3 minutes. Noah converting both for 53-0, 53 minutes in. Result confirmed but Luctonians opt to continue.
The tempo of the game settles again but this time it is Bees camping in the Luctonians 22 bring the game full circle. Bees persist and get close initially though Tom J but a couple of rucks later sees Will L breaking through for the final score of the game on 62 minutes. Aggy converts for 60 - 0.
Some further action with Bees edging it eventually ends with the ref calling time a little early.
Credit the shift Luctonians put in today but Bees defence across the whole team just wouldn't yield - awesome stuff.
Or it could have been some kind of fetid smell in the Bees dead ball area repelling Luctonians. Yes this bit is nonsensical but was inspired by our report from last week!
