Bees under 15s travelled to this traditionally challenging opening fixture with only 15 players, necessitating Mack and Ethan to deputise in the back line.
Lichfield got the better of the scrappy early exchanges scoring a couple of tries, but as the clock ticked over Bees started to gain confidence and began moving the ball fluently along the line, enabling Will to crash over in the corner for the crucial first try. This gave the lads confidence and they started to contest all facets of the game in earnest; the scrum and lineout worked effectively and a greater focus on retaining and recycling the ball was rewarded with a fine try by Kody who consistently impressed with his ability to cross the gain line.
The first half finished with another Lichfield try, coinciding with some concerns around the stamina of the replacement-less Bees 15!
The second half saw Lichfield bring on some hefty substitutes, challenged the tiring Bees scrum and sustained pressure resulted in Lichfield’s fourth try.
Undaunted, the Bees back line maintained their expansive game and replied with another fine individual break and a second try for ‘Man of the Match’ Kody.
Bees continued to compete and, as the match drew to a close, some excellent ball retention on the Lichfield line resulted in James breaking a number of despairing tackles to even the try tally, with 4 tries a piece.
While the result was a loss 28 points to 20 – there were so many positives to be taken from what was a great opening performance. As a team, the boys dug deep and called on all their reserves to complete a highly competitive game of rugby with 15 players.
James was the pick of pack, competing and covering the ground tirelessly, while Jacob showed some really impressive early form catching kick offs and stripping ball from the opposition in the rucks!
That said, the backs as a unit were outstanding, distributing the ball, with Alex, Joe, Will, Kody and Mack collectively delivering on Tuesday trainings agreed commitment to focus on the tackle.
A great contest and a superb start to the season, showing real promise in terms of the teams’ collective commitment and resolve.
Well done every one of you!
