The RFU have announced that 47 players who represented England without the recognition of being capped will have that decision reversed. Included in that number is life member, Chris Gifford who selected for the England XV that played against Argentina in their 1978 tour of the UK, Ireland and Italy.
Chris, who now lives in Australia, was with Moseley RFC when he was selected for the game but started and finished his playing career with Solihull RFC. Chris joined Solihull Rugby Club as a colt in the late sixties and soon made the step up to senior rugby making his 1st XV soon after. A very talented and industrious scrum-half he soon caught the eye of Coventry RFC who at the time were recognised as one of the top clubs in the country with a side packed with England Internationals. Chris went on to make 68 appearances for Coventry and was selected to play for Warwickshire in the County Championship.
Following his move to Midlands rivals Moseley, Chris received further representative recognition and was chosen for the full Midlands squad taking him closer to international honours. Chris was selected to represent his country in the then non-cap International v Argentina. Argentina forced a 13-13 draw against a full strength England team, with Chris scoring one of England’s tries.
The following year Chris was a member of the England squad that embarked on its first tour of the Far East taking in games against Japan, Fiji and Tonga.
After a long and successful career at Moseley, including playing in the Sam Doble Memorial game v a British Lion’s XV and a John Player Cup Final at Twickenham, Chris returned to his first club Solihull.
His return saw an upturn in the club’s fortunes and they enjoyed a period of great success in the County Cup under his leadership. His experience and guidance brought out the best in a young side and upon the establishment of leagues Solihull were placed in National League Division 4.
Chris stepped down from first team rugby but continued to serve the Club as Chairman of Selectors, Coach and President. In recognition of his long and fine service to the Club he was granted Honorary Life Membership.
The club extends its congratulations to Chris on his elevation to full cap status, an honour which is richly deserved.
