David Blick

RIP

The club has learned the sad news that former Birmingham RFC player David Blick yesterday lost his battle with cancer.

"Blicky"played for Birmingham City Police whom he captained from 1960. Introduced to Birmingham RFC by Jim Pedersen in 1962, he became the mainstay of the pack during the very successful climb up the rugby ladder. He represented British Police, English Police and Midlands Police as well as North Mids. His notable claim to fame is that he scored the 1st ever try at Portway against Nottingham before the official opening against Moseley a week later.

Blicky later became chairman of West Midlands Police and had a positive influence on the younger players. He continued to support Bees until he was physically unable. Former team mate and regular dirt tracker, Nigel Bell, recalls "Where ever we played in those wonderful days of 60's and 70's everyone remembered Blicky, sometimes with a certain amount of fear!! I shall miss the old bugger"

David Millichamp, who was a police colleague and teammate, said "Blicky was the ‘enforcer’ in our pack and occasionally enforced his own forwards if he thought they were malingering."

On behalf of all at the club, we offer our sincerest condolences to his family.
