Bees make fourth successive North Mids final
Portway with no wind and sunshine for the NM Cup semi-final against Newport. Newport fielding just 14 and uncontested scrums for today.
Newport kick off and following initial exchanges Newport secure the first points from a penalty on Bees 22 for holding on. 0-3 on 6 minutes.
Newport secure possession from the restart initially recycling before Nathan intercepts a pass in midfield and goes through from the 22 for an instant reply. Noah converts for 7-3 (7 minutes)
The game settles with both sides favouring using the backs rather than contesting at the breakdown. Play concentrated between the respective 10m’s before Bees kick deep following a scrum from a Newport knock on. Kick is deep into Newport 22 and then touch. Newport secure ball from their lineout and box kick clear but Bees run the return, recycle on the 22 and a cross field kick finds Josh after one bounce who gathers to go over. Noah converts for 14-3 (14 minutes)
Bees start exercising a bit of control territory wise with both teams utilising their backs and kicking for territory. Both defences holding up with neither side either to create clean breaks. From a Newport scrum a chip over the Bees line scrambling defence sees Noah gather and run the return before chipping and winning the foot race to gather and go over. 19-3 (30 minutes)
Newport restart and Andy makes a clean break through the pack and offloading to set up Nathan to go over from out wide for the last scoring action of the first half. 24-3 (33 minutes)
Bees restart but knock on at the first contact. Newport recycle well before kicking for touch. From the Bees lineout Newport come up with the ball but are penalised for holding at the next ruck. Bees run and go wide with the ball finding PJ who jinks through a couple of tackles before going over. Noah converts for 31-3 (38 minutes).
Bees back on the scoreboard quickly following an initial break by Noah and an offload to the supporting Kamil to go over. Noah converts for 38-3 (41 minutes)
14 man Newport still wanted more from this game and got their just rewards following a line out in Bees 22. Ball secured and recycled midfield but close enough to Bees line to crash over for 38-8 (51 minutes).
Bees are back on the scoreboard again a few minutes later with another chip and chase for Noah and following possibly the only occasion in the game when a few phases of hard straight running creates the space for Lewis H to go over. Both converted for 52-8 (64 minutes gone).
That was it for Bees but not Newport who gained further reward for their efforts with a snipe from the 9 following a 5m scrum to close out the game 52-13.
So an effective performance to take Bees on to a fourth successive NM Cup Final.
