A fantastic festival of rugby

It was another glorious day at local rivals the ‘Sils’ as Bees under 11s took part in their second festival. With a number of players playing their first game this season, the team might have been hoping for an easy opening match but from the very first kick off the opposition threw wave after wave of attacks at the Bees’ line. The under 11s are however a tough bunch and the tackling was ferocious. Robert and Luca stood out in the defensive effort, never missing a tackle and, when the ball did come in Bees’ direction, defence was swiftly turned in to attack. Charlie (returning to his familiar scrum-half role) was quick to distribute the ball and when it found the hands of the outfield players, they charged at the opposition line.
Brendan –making his Bees’ debut- looked superb in the middle of the pitch and, despite one great breakaway try, was unlucky not to score more as he was foiled by a number of last ditch tackles. Fraser returned to his usual style of mazy running outfoxing defenders and hunting for gaps whilst Stephen proved to be solid at the back fielding the kicks and making ground. William A continued his excellent start to the season and was one of our most aggressive player at the breakdown. Noah filled the role of fly half and produced some sublime kicks which put Bees on the front foot and Tyler (once he had two boots) reacted quickly to the loose ball making a few good interceptions. William B and Josh played the role of forwards and made some powerful charges whilst Joe (usually playing as hooker) had a fantastic morning, thoroughly deserving the try he scored after a monstrous run through the middle.
There were some great performances and the defensive effort could not be faulted however the ruck was an area in which Bees were too often dominated, meaning that the team did not always win the ball back at the breakdown. If this can be perfected then the speedy runners will surely be provided with enough ball to unlock defences and become a really powerful team.
