Great Day of Rugby

Thankfully yesterday’s deluge was a distant memory as the Broadstreet Festival was blessed with perfect conditions for running rugby. With the first opportunity to play a competitive match the team looked a little rusty in the early exchanges but it wasn’t long before tackles began to slam in and passes began to stick. With Summer blitzing in to every ruck, Bees were provided with plenty of ball and Luca’s distribution allowed Noah to get the line moving giving Josh, Tyler and Curtis plenty of chances to run in open spaces on the wing with the ball in their hands.
Eddie drove the ball forward at every opportunity and was ably assisted by Will B, who was monstrous in his attacking play, and whenever Robert got hold of the ball he left a trail of despairing defenders in his wake. Oliver played with his usual mix of flair and chaos scoring one particularly audacious try from a speculative kick. Whenever the opposition kicked the ball downfield it was scooped from the sky by Stephen, who never dropped a single catch and Will A, who had a tremendous afternoon, played out of his skin and thoroughly deserved his well taken try.
There were many great highlights including a brilliant pass and loop by Robert (which saw him race clear to score one of his four tries) and a superb kick and chase by Curtis which would have surely resulted in a try had the ball not trickled in to touch. With five matches played the team finished the day with one win, two draws and two losses however this does not tell the whole story. In both of the losses the team only lost by a single try and in one of the draws the opposition scored in the last second of the game.
There is plenty to work on for next week (not least deciding exactly when and where to kick) however the commitment and determination displayed by every player could not be faulted and it certainly proved to be a very enjoyable day of rugby.
