Bees small squad wins through in tough conditions

Away at Droitwich, a cold grey morning but the frost eased sufficiently to allow play.

Sizing up the opposition it looked like it may be a tough fixture.

Match 1

Bees kick off and good pressure meant possession was swiftly won back. A strong break from Euan thru middle gained ground and Bees retained the ball at the breakdown before spreading it wide for Roman to run in for the first try – a great start!

From the re-start Bees were straight back at Droitwich with a long sweeping run from George to the right hand touchline – good support meant Sam was able to pluck the ball from the breakdown and run in a second try in almost as many minutes. 2:0 bees.

The team had their tales up now and again straight from kick were able to get there 3rd score on the board, with good hands and running between George, Euan and Lochie with Lochie breaking a tackle to make the try.

Bees retained possession from the kick-off but some stray passes allowed Droitwich to apply pressure on Bees in Bees’ own half but they kept their composure and fought back to half way without conceding points.

Droitwich fought forwards again to Bees 22 following a scrum but then with turnover ball Euan broke from the Bees 22. Good hands got the ball to George who was tackled on Droitwich 10 yard line. Bees kept the ball through another couple of phases and good hands and the ball got to Will (H) who found his legs again to run in Bees 4th try and end the half half 4-0 to Bees.

Half time.

The 2nd half saw Droitwich pick there game up and resulted in a more even half with plenty of rucking and mauling in the centre of the pitch.

Good defence from Bees against the kick off from Droitwich but sustained pressure over a few phases finally awarded Droitwich with a break in the bees line and their first try.

Some good tactical kicking by Bees kept pushing Droitwich back to their own half and Bees were unlucky not to capitalise with a strong follow-up with Sam. Combined with some good hands at times and attempts to spread the ball wide, Bees were able keep pegging Droitwich back.

Full time 4:1 to Bees

Match 2

Bees kick off.  Good hands from the breakdown out to George on the wing who again made swift progress to the Droitwich 22. Droitwich fought back and though Bees won possession back a knock-on meant Droitwich were able to maintain pressure and after a couple of strong phased and straight running they were rewarded with a try.

Good pressure by Bees from the re-start pinned Droitwich back under their posts and in their 22. But following a scrum to Bees on the Droitwich 22 scrappy play from bees allowed a Droitwich pick up at 10 yrds to run in another try.

the tide was moving in Droitwich’s favour now and despite Bees some pressure some missed tackles and stray passing allowed Droitwich a clear run in for try 3

Time for Bees to respond! Joe picked up from the kick-off and a pass to Euan gave him space to run into the corner to stem the tide just before half time.

Half time

From the re-start Euan again was in the fray and produced another strong run down the line. Good Bees support secured possession and won a scrum inside the Droitwich 22. Good phases and hands with a strong break by George up the middle ended with Lochie running in a try to start 2nd half well, and things were shaping up for a tight finish.

Good pressure from a scrum enabled Euan to win back possession for Bees. Lochie’s run was halted but Bees pressure resulted in a penalty to bees on the Droitwich line which was converted to a try for Joe.

All evens at 3-3 and everything to play for. Bees resisted pressure from a Droitwich scrum on the Bees 22 and secured a knock-on but then conceded a penalty at a breakdown and a burst of pressure by Droitwich up the centre of the pitch gave them a try to steal a victory on the second match on the stroke of full time.

Full time: 3:4 to Droitwich.

A good showing by the team. Some strong running and support and great hands at times, and kept coming back despite some decisions going against us. Well done everybody!
