Mud and Guts
National Cup ends at Round 2
Cold breezy and the occasional snow flurry so typical Winters afternoon at Portway.
Short report today . Lots of grunt and guts for the best part of 20 minutes with neither side really exerting control but Luctonians edging the territory. The deadlock broken 17 minutes in by Bees. Following one of many knock on’s in the opening exchanges Bees secure possession from their scrum and chip over the defence, some good chasing and pressure earning turnover ball deep in the 22 which is sent into midfield for Corry to go over for 5-0.
Much the same slug fest with the much bigger Luctonians pack generally making yards. Following a good spell in Bees 22. A penalty for going in at the sidegiving Luctonians a straightforward 3 points on 24 minutes.
Luctonians continue to control the territory but a couple of cheap penalties allow Bees to progress up past the 10m line. Lineout ball gets sent into midfield a called chip into the 22 sees Nathan gather well and go over. Aggy converts 0n 30 minutes for 12-3.
Luctonians grinding play continues to control territory and following sustained pressure in Bees 22 the ball is sent wide and Luctonians go over for 12-8 on 33 minutes. This marked the end of the scoring for the first half.
If Bees lacked territory in the first half, it didn’t get any better in the second. Plenty of commitment and a tackle count for the day that would be enormous but a steady flow of scores by Luctonians every 7/8 minutes to rack up a final tally of 30 points. The replacement 9 for Luctonians added probably the only fizz of the game and certainly a lot of the points.
So a deserved win for Luctonians.
