Bees bounce back to pounce on Leicester Lions

Bees bounced back from their opening-day defeat to sweep aside a determined Leicester Lions outfit at Portway.

And coach Matt Long explained they did it by going back to basics.

“We knew we had under-performed last week when we had a few people settling in to different roles, but this week we have gone back to basics and continued where we left off last season,” he said.

“We have kept hold of the ball and we looked like we wanted to win. We also boxed clever a little bit. The guys that were new last year are starting to mature and with the likes of Rod (Petty) coming in, we are able to control games.”

The visitors outscored Bees by three tries to two but it was the pin-point accuracy of kicker Adam Canning that made the difference.
He had scored two early penalties before back-row Rob Connolly sneaked in for the first of his side’s two tries just before the break, cancelling out a converted penalty try for the visitors.

Canning then took centre stage with a try, a conversion and three second-half penalties as he racked up 24 points before a brace of late tries from the visitors
