Bees head to Hinckley for poignant encounter
The Bees travel to Hinckley this Saturday (19th September, Leicester Road KO 3pm) in what will be a poignant encounter for both sides.
Rob Walton had close ties with both clubs and his recent tragic death will no doubt be in the minds of both sets of players and supporters.
The Bees come into the game still searching for the first win of their league campaign, having suffered a narrow defeat at home to Bromsgrove last week. In contrast, Hinckley have an unbeaten record thus far, having defeated Scunthorpe 21-13 in their opening home game, then beating Sutton Coldfield emphatically 3-46 at Walmley Road last weekend.
Bees Head of Rugby Ian Matthews has rung the changes ahead of Saturday’s game. In the pack, Jake Hayden-Wright starts at loose-head following an impressive debut from the bench last weekend, with Pete Koziot moving to tight-head.
In the back row, Adam Gwillam comes in at 7 following two outstanding performances for the Development XV to complement Steve Leach and Ashley Scriven.
In the backs, Jack Jolly replaces the unavailable Marty Hooker, with Jimmy Oliver starting at 13 for the injured Steve Johns. Darius Price will make his league debut on the right wing.
Nick Bingham and Rob Greg are joined on the bench by new recruit Mickey Whittle.
Speaking ahead of the game, Iam Matthews said; “The coaching staff have been working the team hard in training this week ahead of our hunt for the first win of the season. The squad are looking forward to the prospect of an away game and the chance for a bonding trip on the bus heading over to Hinckley.”
“We are also aware of the added poignancy to this fixture and the fact that two of Rob Walton’s former clubs meet on the park so soon after his passing will give a perfect opportunity to mark his contribution to both clubs. The Bees players will be getting together to contribute towards the trust fund set up in his memory for the benefit of his children.”
