Bees hoping to crack a tough nut from the Garden County

Canterbury RFC v Bees: Saturday 16 February 2019, 3.00pm KO

Having recovered from a 10-3 deficit at the end of the first quarter, Bees ran out comfortable winners (39-10) against Guernsey Raiders. The victory moving the men in Gold and Black into fourteenth place, above the Raiders and London Irish Wild Geese.

This Saturday Bees travel to East Kent to play Canterbury RFC. The “Men of Kent” sit in second place on 87 points, having won 17 and lost 5 of their opening 22 matches. Last time out they won 39-17 at Clifton.

Canterbury are going to be a tough nut for Bees to crack as they have won all ten games they have played at their Merton Lane ground.

In the game at Portway between the two sides which took place towards the end of October, Bees put in a pretty good shift, only to be beaten 31-17 by the better side on the day.

As Bees have never played at Canterbury before, here are some interesting facts about the City:-

- Canterbury Cathedral is opened and closed each day with the ringing of a 17th century bell;

- From his house and workshop in Canterbury, in partnership with Oliver Postgate, Peter Firmin created Bagpuss, The Clangers and Ivor the Engine, still to be seen at the City's Beaney House of Art & Knowledge;

- The eccentric millionaire, racing driver, Count Louis Zborowski who lived at Higham Park (today known as Highland Court) near Canterbury, was the inspiration behind the children’s book Chitty Chitty Bang Bang written by Ian Fleming.

Ironically, Canterbury RFC are hoping to move to a new ground at Highland Court but received a setback last week when the planning application was turned down by Canterbury City Council's Planning Committee.

Canterbury RFC was founded in 1929. 2005/06, was a particularly successful season for them, winning both London 1 and the Kent Cup. Additionally, they were named as Team of the Year by Rugby World Magazine. Canterbury then experienced 5 seasons playing level 4 rugby, before being relegated at the end of the 2010/11 season.

The following season they beat Tonbridge Juddians to the National League 3 London & South East title. 2018/19, marks their 7th successive season in National League 2 South. Last season they finished tenth on 72 points.
