Bees wary of a backlash up in the Potteries

Birmingham & Solihull travel up to the Potteries this Saturday (21st October, KO 3pm) to play Longton in the seventh round of Midlands Premier League fixtures.

The Bees are in a fine vein of form, undefeated in the first six league outings and running in 40 tries in the process. Their emphatic 72-17 rout of Lichfield last Saturday kept them in second spot, just one bonus point shy of league leaders Peterborough.

Their opponents this Saturday currently lie in ninth place in the table, mustering just two wins to date. They will no doubt be smarting from a 72-0 defeat inflicted upon them away at Sandbach the previous weekend and the Bees need to be wary of a potential Longton backlash.

Indeed, Longton won the corresponding fixture at Trentham Fields last season, running out worthy 22-11 winners. The Bees put in a much better performance on home soil in February, coming out on top 30-10 in the mud with tries for Ashley Scriven, Danny Wright, Jack Joly and Chip, all of whom feature in the line-up for this Saturday.

Pete Glackin has made one change to the line-up that started against Lichfield, with Matt Spink starting in the engine room and Danny Wright switching to openside flanker. A fit again Kurtis Payne joins Ashley Scriven and Jack Secher on the bench.

Longton’s two wins so far this season were notched up against Nuneaton (36-27) at home and away at Old Halesonians (24-29), whilst their defeats have been at the hands of Newbold at home (35-41) and away at Newport Salop (45-0), Peterborough Lions (28-41 where they are the only side to date to have run in four tries against the league leaders) and last week’s drubbing over the border in Cheshire.
