Bees looking to build on good early season home form as they head west for the first away fixture of season

With wins in both their opening two home games, the Bees hit the road for the first time in their 2017/18 Midlands Premier League campaign, travelling to Bridgnorth (Saturday 16th September, KO 3pm).

The Bees notched up their second successive home win of the season last Saturday with a convincing victory against Bournville, who racked up no less than four yellow cards in the opening period. Going into the break 30-8 up with the bonus point already secured, an impressive defensive display in the second half saw Pete Glackin’s men increase their points tally to 54, without conceding a score.

The five points secured against Bournville followed on from a hard-fought 20-15 win against Scunthorpe at Portway the week before.

Bridgnorth have had a less fruitful start to their season, narrowly losing their two opening games – the first 26-27 at home to Peterborough and then going down 29-26 last weekend up at Sandbach.

The Bees got the better of Bridgnorth in both their encounters last season. The game in Shropshire in September saw the visitors put a dismal first half performance behind them to eventually run out 22-26 winners – a second half display which proved to be a turning point in their fortunes for the next four months of the season.

On the return fixture at Portway in January, the Bees again got the better of a belligerent Bridgnorth side with a bonus-point 29-14 win, which at the time kept them in the mix near the top of the table.

Due to be sporting the new away kit for the first time this season, there is just one personnel change to the Bees side that put Bournville to the sword last weekend.

With Michael Stephens unavailable, Danny Wright takes the blindside flanker berth, with Ashley Scriven moving to the openside. Matt Spink is promoted to the second row, with Reece Donaldson coming in on the bench.

Steve Johns has recovered from a knock picked up last week to retain his place on the wing. He and fellow winger JT Nabetelevu have scored five tries between them in the first two outings of the season.

Meanwhile the Hornets are home for the first time this season, with a tough game in prospect against Hinckley 2nds (KO 3pm, Portway).
