Playing & Training Times

The 2011/12 rugby season starts on 4th September 2011 and finishes at the end of April. Player registration and training starts in September with fixtures and festivals taking place from October to April.

Mini & Junior teams train and play at Portway at J3 of the M42. Training sessions and matches run from 10.30 – 12.00 on Sunday mornings; individual age groups may train during the week. Match details are published on this website and in the club fixture card.

Players are gradually introduced to the skills and rules of rugby football as they grow older. Tag rugby is played at U7 and U8s, tackling, uncontested scrums and lineouts are introduced to U9s with contested scrums and lineouts from U10 – U12. It is not until the players reach their teenage years as Juniors that the complete game is played on a full sized pitch.

All the different stages and individual year group rules are explained in the Developing_Your_Community_Rugby_Club

Membership

Birmingham & Solihull is a fully inclusive rugby club, the ability to pay annual membership and subscription fees does not prohibit anyone joining and enjoying the game. The club appreciates everyone’s contribution to the development of the club so should any junior players or coaches have any problems with the payment of membership fees please speak to your age group Lead Coach.

To play matches, festivals or tournaments you must be a registered member. It is a requirement for all children to be registered by the club and our constituent body, the North Midlands RFU.

Existing members need to renew their membership during Registration whilst new members can join at any time during the season - come along on a Sunday morning for a run out before making a commitment to join.

We will maintain a list of all Mini & Junior members on the club database and you have the club’s assurance that this information will only be used for administration purposes.

What is provided?

At Portway we have 4 full sized rugby pitches and individual pitches for the U7 – U11 age groups as well as a welcoming clubhouse and changing facilities.
Each player receives:

  • Coaching from qualified and CRB checked coaches
  • Opportunities to play in both home and away matches

  • Provision of a club playing/training shirt
  • Entry into relevant festivals and cup competitions
  • Opportunity to tour
  • Qualified referees (where appropriate)
  • Use of clubhouse and changing facilities
  • Post match food for players at all home games
  • Admission to all Birmingham & Solihull Bees home National 1 games *

* Subject to receipt of membership/subscription payment.

Playing Kit

Shirts will be provided for match days. Players, parents or guardians are responsible for the cleaning of this shirt and the return of it to their coach at the end of the season. We strongly recommend the use of a gum shield and shin pads for all matches and training sessions. Boots can either be of moulded or aluminum stud but not longer than 21mm, with no sharp edges or burring.

We encourage players to match their playing attire to the weather conditions and encourage the wearing of layers of clothing, beanie hats, mittens and tracksuits in the winter months as Portway is renowned for its wind chill factor!

Samurai are the club’s official kit supplier and a comprehensive range of rugby kit is available on Sunday mornings from the Kit shop. These include tracksuits, shorts, socks, undervests, gloves, gum shields, kicking tees and much more.

For further information on kit please contact Lyn Perrin.

Tours

As well as welcoming touring sides to Birmingham & Solihull, each year many of the Mini & Junior age groups go on tour themselves- normally a weekend away, somewhere within the British Isles or on occasion, further afield. This year's destinations will be unveiled at a later date.
