M&J DEVELOPMENT

Player Development

With the real intention of creating one team from start to finish Birmingham & Solihull Rugby Club have launched their Advanced Player Development Group (APDG) - the aim being to develop today's Mini & Junior players through to the senior squads, Bees or Hornets, of tomorrow.

The experience and skills of the APDG coaches, video analysis and specific core skills training will all be utilised to provide development over three phases.

Phase One

All age groups coaches from U13s to U17s to complete a player profile sheet for each player in order to assess baseline ability. For Mini's a general age group summary is required.

Phase Two

All age groups to be assessed during games and/or training to confirm profiles, establish age group specific needs and to identify players who may be capable of playing at an elite level.

Phase Three

APDG coaches to run specific sessions with individual age groups to improve identified weaknesses. Action plans to be provided to each age group coach to assist with continued player development.

Continued Improvement

APDG coaches to perform ongoing assessment to monitor development. Specific unit/skills sessions across all age groups to be scheduled monthly.

Talent Identification

During APDG sessions and assessments players with exceptional talent, who may have the potential to play a high level of rugby, will be identified. These players will be nurtured and given specialist core skills coaching to facilitate further development.
Players with the necessary potential will be provided access to enhanced skills training in accordance with the RFU Curriculum and at the appropriate age conditioning and nutritional advice will be provided courtesy of the Bees professional performance team, with invitations to attend 1st XV squad sessions also extended.

COACH DEVELOPMENT

Player retention is vital to any club and the wider game. One of the main reasons given for players leaving a club, or even worse the game, is a poor standard of coaching. Therefore, a key method of recruiting and retaining good players is to improve the quality of coaching.

John Domachi is the Club's Coaching Coordinator, he is a member of the North Midlands Coaching Committee and advises coaches on the most appropriate courses for their development and also recommends seminars, coaching clinics and CPD opportunities.

As coaching becomes more popular and increasingly standardised, and with the advent of coach licensing, the range of courses will grow correspondingly, so it is beneficial to have local and immediate source of information from your Club coach coordinator.

Birmingham & Solihull Rugby Club’s Mini & Junior section has 40 volunteer coaches all of whom are CRB checked, their primary role being to continue developing the skills and attitudes of over 300 players aged from U7 to U17.

All Birmingham & Solihull coaches are entered into development programmes, which see them continually up-skilled whilst being guided towards NGB courses (Foundation Award and Continued Professional Development (CPD) courses).

In addition a great deal of emphasis is placed on safety, developing skills and techniques that will enable players to enjoy playing rugby for years to come.

This season an inspiring partnership has also been created whereby the club's coaches and young players are supported and mentored by the Bees' National 1 players, in running special training days, As well as other varied events we will continue with last seasons very successful “meet the players” at which Bees players will discuss their own personal rugby experiences and explain what it takes to go from being a Mini & Junior to a professional rugby player.

Such interaction will include our very own monthly ‘Coaching the Coach’ training sessions which will take place each month starting on Wednesday 28th September 2011 at 7:30 pm at Portway, with both Rusty and Eugene involved. The subject being 'fundamentals.'Following this will be a meeting with our new M & J Chairman Lou Lupoli.
