Pertemps Bees 17 Rotherham 31
In a breathtaking start to the season, and with no scrums and
only one lineout in the first 20 minutes, the players from Bees and Rotherham
started the season with a high quality first half.
Two tries were scored by both sides in the half with 18 year old Jack Preece
scoring a debut try with a good piece of mauling. Jon Higgins and Paul Knight
controlled the game from deep and amongst the forwards, Earnshaw and Long were
prominent, with the half finishing level at 17 a piece.
Rotherham scored an early try in the second half, Grissing making it a hat trick
for Rotherham. With both sides continuing to play high quality rugby, Bees made
a number of tactical substitutions just before the hour, and continued to threaten
but were unable to break down a resolve defence. Rotherham made the score 31-17
by a backs move finished by full back Lennard and although Bees had a sustained
6 minute period on the Rotherham line, they were unable to break down the defence.
The full timers of Rotherham ultimately deserved their victory, but with a competitive
scrum, back and forwards working well, and a healthy crowd, it look like an
exciting season ahead for the Bees.
