Pertemps Bees 36 Nottingham 43
Pertemps Bees 36 Nottingham 43
Pertemps Bees ended their season by playing their full
part in a 12-try thriller which secured them two bonus points but not their
first National One win over Nottingham.
With their league status long since assured, the Bees took the opportunity to
play a fast and open again and matched Nottingham, who put 50 points on them
in January, try-for-try.
Tom Barlow gave Nottingham the lead with an early penalty but the Bees responded
quickly when winger Kyle Palm jinked through and Jon Higgins added the conversion.
Full-back Matt Nuthall, who will join Neath next season, latched on to an ambitious
pass from Barlow and went the length of the pitch for an interception score
and Higgins again converted.
But Neil Fowkes, who had a spell on loan at Bees earlier in the season, completed
the rare distinction of scoring tries for and against Nottingham. Fowkes crossed
in the first meeting at Meadow Lane for Bees during his loan spell and crashed
over from close range with Neil Stenhouse converting.
The second half was thrilling end-to-end stuff with Tom Court throwing a long
pass to Higgins who set up winger Reece Spee. Higgins converted but the Bees'
lead was wiped out with two converted tries for Nottingham from Nick Rouse and
Ben Thompson.
Back came the Bees with Fijian flanker Akapusi Qera signing off before his move
to Gloucester by scoring his 16th try of the season from a line-out drive.
Palm restored the lead when he went over for his second try of the match which
was soon followed by Nuthall's second after a break from Spee.
But the Bees then conceded a penalty try which Stenhouse improved to level the
scored and and Rohan Nirmalandran sealed victory for Nottingham with the final
try of the season.
DAVIDSON TO MISS NOTTINGHAM GAME (April 27 2007)
Pertemps Bees lock Alex Davidson has been ruled
out of the final National League One game of the season against Nottingham at
Sharmans Cross Road tomorrow (3pm).
Davidson suffered an injury to the arch of a foot in last Sunday's defeat at
Cornish Pirates and he failed a final fitness test last night. He hopes to be
fit to play for North Midlands in their County Championship campaign which begins
next week.
Dan Tuohy, who replaced Davidson at Cornish Pirates, will partner Mark Gabey
in the second row against Nottingham.
Canadian international prop Casey Dunning will make his first start in more
than four months. Dunning broke an ankle against Sedgley Park in December but
returned to action last month.
Dunning has been kept out of the starting XV by Matt Long since he regained
fitness but Long has been named as a replacement for tomorrow's game and he
is expected to play the second half at loosehead.
England sevens flanker Will Matthews returns to the starting line-up in place
of Leo Halavatau, who reverts to the bench, and Simon Martin will partner Dave
Knight in the centre in his farewell game for the club.
Martin, who is to join Taunton as player/coach, will have the honour of captaining
the team and leading out the side in his final game of senior rugby after a
career that began with Bristol and included a spell with Coventry.
Other players saying their farewells tomorrow will be Fijian international flanker
Akapusi Qera, who has joined Gloucester, full-back Matt Nuthall, who has signed
for Neath, and centre Tristan Davies, who is expected to sign for Cardiff.
