Newbury 47 Pertemps Bees 14
Newbury 47 Pertemps Bees 14
Pertemps Bees ran out of second half comebacks as they
slumped to a depressing defeat at Monks Lane.
The Bees have usually saved their best rugby for the second half in recent weeks
but left themselves with far too much to do as they conceded 32 points in the
first period to an in-form Newbury who avanged their defeat in the EDF Energy
National Trophy quarter-finals earlier in the season.
Newbury also completed a season's double over the Bees with full-back Nick Defty
contributing 245 points to their win, including two tries.
Tries from Leo Halavatau and centre Dave Knight, both converted by Jon Higgins,
were of little consolation to the Bees who appeared a little demob happy in
the final three weeks of the season.
It was a performance that left Steve Williams, the normally-upbeat head coach,
struggling to find positives.
"We were going through the motions," Williams said. "I'm not
saying that's acceptable but it was a typical end-of-season match with little
resting on it.
"They were at the end of a losing streak and they just wanted it more than
we did.
"We shouldn't be losing that heavily to a team like Newbury because they
are nothing special, but they were just a bit sharper up front and behind."
Bees complete their away programme when they travel to Camborne to face Cornish
Pirates, the newly-crowned EDF Energy National Trophy champions, on April 22.
SPEE OUT OF NEWBURY GAME
(April 13 2007)
Pertemps Bees will be without winger Reece Spee for their rearranged National
League One game against Newbury at Monks Lane on Saturday April 14 (3pm).

Adam Billig.

to sit on the bench with Dave Knight taking his place in the starting XV.
Hooker Matt Miles has recovered from the ankle injury he sustained at Coventry
and has been passed fit to take his place in the front row.
The other change is in the back-row where Wales Under-20 international Matt
Larsen has recovered from a dead leg and takes the place of Akapusi Qera who
has a knee problem.
