Pertemps Bees 31 London Welsh 27
Pertemps Bees 31 London WeLsh 27
Pertemps Bees produced a superb fightback to stun London
Welsh with a spectacular maximum points win at Sharmans Cross road.
The Exiles came to the Midlands with the reputation as being one of the most
improved National One clubs since Christmas. They suggested as much when they
opened up a 17-0 lead in the first half but they had no response to the pace
and power of the Bees after the break.
It was a try from prop Matt Long in the dying minutes of the first half that
really gave the Bees the belief that they could produce an unlikely win and
they built on it with impressive performances from replacement back-row Leo
Halavatua, hooker Matt Miles and fly-half Jon Higgins in the second half.
The Exiles built their apparently commanding lead with tries from lock Kevin
Burke and wing James Wellwood and two conversions and a penalty from Tom Marks.
But Long's try and Higgins' conversion trimmed the deficit before the break
and it was a transformed Bees' team that took the field for the second half.
Miles continued the fightback when he powered over from a quick tapped penalty
by Higgins and Reece Spee, normally a scrum-half, took the chace to show his
paces on the wing when he rounded off a flowing attacking move to put the Bees
ahead for the first time.
Higgins converted both tries but Marks slotted a penalty to pull the Exiles
to within a point.
But the momentum was with the Bees. Higgins slotted a penalty in an assured
display of goal-kicking and flanker Tom Rawlins then scored the deciding try
which Higgins improved from the touchline.
The Exiles salvaged a bonus point when winger Alex Cadwallader crossed with
the last play of the match deep into injury time and Marks slotted the conversion.
FITNESS BOOSTS FOR PERTEMPS BEES
(March 16 2007)
Pertemps Bees have received a triple fitness boost ahead of their National league
One game against London Welsh at Sharmans Cross Road tomorrow (3pm).
Fly-half Jon Higgins has made a quicker-than-expected recovery from the shoulder
injury he sustained in last week's defeat at Doncaster and has been passed fit
to take his place in the starting XV.
Canadian international prop Casey Dunning (broken ankle) and back-row forward
Dan Tuohy (knee) have also recovered sufficiently from their long-term injuries
and have been named as replacements. It is intended that Dunning and Tuohy will
play between five and ten minutes each against London Welsh with the aim of
proving their fitness ahead of next week's EDF Energy National Trophy semi-final
at Exeter.
Fijian international flanker Akapusi Qera is also likely to be fit to play at
Exeter but he misses out against London Welsh having suffered a rib injury at
Doncaster.
Dean Miller, Tom Rawlins and Mark George will form a new back row against the
Exiles with England sevens flanker Will Matthews missing out because of a hand
injury.
Skipper Mark Cornwell is rested having played a full 80 minutes for the Barbarians
in their midweek defeat by East Midlands at Bedford. Mark Gabey, Cornwell's
regular second row partner, will lead the side against London Welsh with Alex
Davidson returning to the starting XV.
Pertemps Bees: 15 Matt Nuthall; 14 Reece Spee, 13 Dave Knight, 12 Adam Billig, 11 Kyle Palm; 10 Jon Higgins, 9 Rod Petty; 1 Matt Long, 2 Matt Miles, 3 Tom Court, 4 Alex Davidson, 5 Mark Gabey (captain), 6 Dean Miller, 7 Tom Rawlins, 8 Mark George.
