Doncaster 62 Pertemps Bees 25
Doncaster 62 Pertemps Bees 25
Pertemps Bees could take some perverse satisfaction from the part they played
in an entertaining if chaotic encounter at Castle Park.
The Bees suffered their heaviest defeat of the season yet returned from South
Yorkshire with a bonus point having scored four tries and held the lead for
most of the first half.
In fact the Bees were only four points adrift at the break but injuries to Jon
Higgins and Akapusi Qera hit an already-depleted squad hard and Doncaster took
a heavy toll by scoring six of their nine tries after the break.
Fly-half Higgins suffered a shoulder injury and Fijian flanker Qera damaged
his ribs, an injury that was serious enough to require x-rays.
There was not hint of the rout that was to follow when the Bees opened up a
ten points lead after Reece Spee, deputising on the wing, intercepted a stray
pass from former Bees fly-half Mark Woodrow and he raced over from 60 metres.
Higgins added the conversion followed by a penalty before Doncaster responded
with a try from Qera's compatriot Netani Talei which Woodrow improved.
But the Bees hit back with hooker Matt Miles crossing for the first of his two
tries after good work from Higgins. Miles added his second try after Woodrow
had struck a penalty but Doncaster went into the break with a lead as hooker
Ben Phillips and Talei scored in the dying minutes of the half and Woodrow added
the conversions.
Qera's departure signalled the beginning of the end for the Bees though they
continue to play and expansive and uninhibited game.
Doncaster claimed the bonus point with a try from prop Ngalu Tau and added a
fifth when winger Paul Bailey crossed.
Winger Kyle Palm continued his improved form by grabbing the bonus point try
for the Bees after good work by Adam Billig but Doncaster cashed in during the
final quarter when skipper Jason Forster, replacement Tom Davies, Phillips again
and Dan Storey ran in further tries.
DAVIES OUT OF DONCASTER MATCH (March 9 2007)
Pertemps
Bees will be without former Wales Under-21 centre Tristan Davies for the National
League One game against Doncaster at Castle Park on Saturday March 10 (2.30pm).
Davies, a summer recruit from Cardiff Blues, pulled a hamstring in training
at Portway last night and it is not yet known how long he will be out of action.
"It's a blow for us," said Steve Williams, Pertemps Bees head coach.
"We will let the injury settled down over the weekend before we know exactly
how long Tristan will be out but it could be a few weeks."
Davies' absence means that Pertemps Bees have been forced to reshuffle their
back-line. Dave Knight, who has just completed an eight weeks suspension for
dangerously tackling an opponent, comes straight back into the starting XV at
centre.
Knight will partner Adam Billig who has been switched from the wing. Billig
has passed a fitness test on the broken nose he sustained in last week's EDF
Eneregy National Trophy quarter-final win at Newbury.
Reece Spee, normally a scrum-half, will start on the right wing, a position
he played in against Cornish Pirates in December, with Simon Martin dropping
to the bench.
Pertemps Bees: 15 Matt Nuthall; 14 Reece Spee, 13 Adam Billig, 12 Dave Knight, 11 Kyle Palm; 10 Jon Higgins, 9 Rod Petty; 1 Matt Long, 2 Matt Miles, 3 Tom Court, 4 Mark Gabey, 5 Mark Cornwell (captain), 6 Will Matthews, 7 Akapusi Qera, 8 Leo Halavatua. Replacements: Alex Davidson, Brendan Lynch, Emyr Lewis, Mark George, Dean Miller, Simon Martin, Mike Baxter.
PERTEMPS BEES WAIT ON BILLIG
(March 8 2007)
Pertemps Bees will await a fitness update on winger Adam
Billig before they finalise their side for the National League One game against
Doncaster at Castle Park on Saturday March 10 (2.30pm).
The former Leicester and Bristol player broke his nose in last Saturday's EDF
Energy National Trophy quarter-final win at Newbury but is hopeful of being
fit to retain his place against Doncaster. Billig will have a precautionary
fitness check at training this evening.
Pertemps Bees will welcome back utility back Dave Knight after the completion
of an eight weeks suspension imposed for dangerously tackling an opponent in
the win at Waterloo in October. Knight's appeal against his conviction was rejected
in mid-January and he has since been restricted to duties as a water carrier
for his team-mates.
Knight may have to settle for a place on the replacements bench for his comeback
match if Billig passes his fitness test. Kyle Palm, the other winger, enjoyed
his best match of the season at Newbury and helped to take Pertemps Bees into
the semi-finals by scoring their opening try.
