Pertemps Bees 19 Launceston 12

The return to action of Mark Linnett was cancelled out by a serious injury to Dan Tuohy as Pertemps Bees were forced to dig deep to reach the fifth round of the EDF National Trophy with this hard-earned win at Sharmans Cross Road.
Former England prop Linnett again came out of`retirement to help the Bees ease their front row problems. He came off the bench after 64 minutes when Emyr Lewis was sin-binned and remained there for the rest of the game, replacing the inexperienced Brendan Lynch when Lewis returned to the fray.
For ten minutes the Bees had a 44 year old loosehead prop and 20 year tighthead but Linnett's experience brought stability to the scrums even though he was unfamiliar with the line-out calls.
"We couldn't train on Thursday evening so my first run-through on the line-out signals was this morning," said Linnett. "I was a bit more nervous than usual and I did wonder whether I had done the right thing by making myself available to play again.
"But I was all right after the first scrum went well. It went all right, I got through OK and I would be happy to help out again although I hope it's something that doesn't happen very often."
The downside for the Bees was that Tuohy suffered a suspected cruciate ligament knee injury early in the first half and he could now miss the remainder of the season. Tuohy will have scans during the week to assess the extent of the injury.
Given the disruption to their side both before and during the game, the Bees will have been satisfied to have secured victory against a Launceston side challenging for promotion to National One.
Two tries from Canadian international winger Brodie Henderson were the highlights for the Bees who were given a couple of late scares when Launceston lock Steve Pape was twice driven over from driving mauls from tapped penalties. Both Launceston tries were scored when the Bees were reduced to seven forwards by the sin-binning of Lewis then replacement lock Alex Davidson.
Launceston regularly tested the Bees' defence with their driving maul but were probably guilty of over-doing the tactic and becoming a little too predictable.
The Bees looked more copmfortable when they had the ball in hand and a period of sustained pressure was rewarded when Fijian flanker Akapusi Qera broke a couple of tackles and skipped over for the opening try which broke the stalemate after 34 minutes. Jon Higgins landed the conversion and followed up with an assured performance at fly-half in which his tactical kicking regularly repelled Launceston raids.
It was 7-0 at half-time but the Bees doubled their lead within a miute of the restart when scrum-half Rod Petty chipped out of defence, Higgins gathered a slipped the ball to Henderson who outpaced the Cornish All Blacks' defence. Higgins added the conversion which was to prove significant as his opposite number Sam Young failed to improve Pape's first try which came shortly after Linnett took the field.
Henderson capitalised on a defensive error by Launceston to run in his second try of the game as the game entered injury time, which restored the Bees 14 points lead but there were some anxious moments, including Pape's second try, before victory was finally secured.

LINNETT ON BENCH FOR TROPHY TIE (January 19 2007)
Pertemps Bees have named former England prop Mark Linnett as a replacement for the EDF National Trophy fourth round tie against Launceston at Sharmans Cross Road on Saturday January 20 (2pm).
Linnett, 44, retired from senior rugby almost six years ago after a career that included spells with Rugby, Moseley, Worcester and Pertemps Bees. But he was re-registered earlier this week to help ease selection problems in the front row caused by an injury to Matt Long and Nottingham's decision to recall Neil Fowkes from his loan spell.
Linnett's last appearance ofr Pertemps Bees came against Nottingham two years ago when he was drafted into the squad as a replacement at the eleventh hour after Martin O'Keefe was stuck in traffic.
Prop Brendan Lynch, who came on as a replacement against Moseley last week, will make his first start since he joined the club from Belfast Harlequins.
The back-line has been rejigged because Dave Knight is suspended until early March and full-back Jon Goodridge is cup-tied having played for Gloucester in the EDF Energy Cup earlier in the season.
Matt Nuthall switched from wing to full-back to replace Goodridge and Kyle Palm and Brodie Henderson have been recalled on the wings. Palm has recently recovered from injury and Henderson, a Canadian international, has been unavailable for a month.
Rod Petty will start at scrum-half having impressed when he came on in that position against Moseley. Mike Baxter and Reece Spee, the club's other specialist scrum-halves, will provide cover for all positions in the backs on the replacements bench.
Jon Higgins starts at fly-half because Brad Davies suffered a hamstring injury against Moseley.
In the pack lock Mark Gabey will make his first start since he suffered a knee injury at London Welsh in mid-November with Alex Davidson dropping to the bench.

Pertemps Bees: 15 Matt Nuthall; 14 Kyle Palm, 13 Tristan Davies, 12 Simon Martin, 11 Brodie Henderson; 10 Jon Higgins, 9 Rod Petty; 1 Emyr Lewis, 2 Stewart Pearl, 3 Brendan Lynch, 4 Mark Gabey, 5 Mark Conrwell (captain), 6 Dan Tuohy, 7 Akapusi Qera, 8 Leo Halavatau. Replacements: Alex Davidson, Matt Miles, Mark Linnett, Dean Miller, Tom Rawlins, Mike Baxter, Reece Spee.

FOWKES RECALLED BY NOTTINGHAM (January 18 2007)
Nottingham have recalled prop Neil Fowkes from his loan spell with Pertemps Bees for the EDF Energy National Trophy fourth round tie at Sedgley Park on Saturday January 20.
Fowkes joined Pertemps Bees on loan three weeks ago to accelerate his recovery from a rib injury which had kept him sidelined for two months.
Nottingham allowed Fowkes to play against them in the National One game at Meadow Lane on January 7 and even scored a try against his employers in Pertemps Bees' 55-19 defeat. But Nottingham do not want Fowkes to become cup-tied by playing for Pertemps Bees in their own National Trophy game against Launceston at Sharmans Cross Road and have now named him in their side at Sedgley Park.
"I didn't want Neil cup-tied by playing for Pertemps Bees," said Glenn Delaney, Nottingham's director of rugby. "I've recalled him because we are a little down on numbers for this game.
"He will come back to us for this week and we will see what happens after that."

GOODRIDGE TO MISS TROPHY GAME (January 18 2007)
Goody GoodyPertemps Bees will be without full-back Jon Goodridge for their EDF Energy National Trophy game against Launceston at Sharmans Cross Road on Saturday January 20 (2pm).
Goodridge, who is on loan from Gloucester, is ineligible for the game as he became cup-tied when he was recalled by the Premiership club for an EDF Energy Cup match against Bristol in October. Players can play in only one of the five EDF-sponsored competitions in a season.
Goodridge's absence, coupled with the suspension of Dave Knight for a dangerous tackle in the league win at Waterloo earlier this season, mean that Pertemps Bees will be forced to reshuffle their back division for the Trophy game.
Matt Nuthall is expected to switch to full-back to cover for Goodridge with Kyle Palm and Canadian international Brodie Henderson likely to return to the squad on the wings. Henderson has been unavailable for selection since the defeat at Leeds in mid-December.
In the pack Brendan Lynch is likely to get his first start at tighthead prop as Matt Long has joined a growing casualty list. Former England prop Mark Linnett is likely to be named as a replacement following his agreement to come out of retirement to ease the selection problems. Linnett, 44, has now been registered by Pertemps Bees and will be eligible for selection for the remainder of the season.
Lock Mark Gabey is expected to resume his second row partnership with captain Mark Cornwell. Gabey, a summer recruit from Exeter, has not started a game since he sustained a knee injury in the win at London Welsh in mid-November, an injury that required subsequent surgery.
