Lock Liam Dunne was the hero of an historic 22-6 victory for the Pertemps Bees
Academy in their first ever fixture against Bromsgrove Under-17s under the Portway
floodlights this evening.
Dunne, who plays for Birmingham & Solihull's Colts team, scored a hat-trick
of tries as the Bees Academy impressed in front of a large crowd.
Alex Warner contributed the other sevn points with two conversions and a penalty
against a Bromsgrove team who have played together all season.
"It was an excellent performance against a team who are much more familar
with themselves," said Ben Harvey, the Bees' Academy coach.
"We weren't quite sure how good the side would be so it was difficult to
know at what level to pitch our fixtures.
"We will certainly be looking to play more
games before the end of the season but we are very grateful to Bromsgrove for
being the first opponents for this historic game."
The Academy was launched by the National One club last summer in partnership
with South Birmingham College offering youngsters the chance to combine vocational
training at the college with specialist rugby coaching.
The course has attracted an initial intake of 24 students who receive rugby
coaching at Portway on three afternoons from Harvey, the former England sevens
international scrum-half.
